About Comondú
It is an oasis in the desert, where smaller places with great natural and cultural richness are ideal for alternative tourism. It is conformed of older towns that originated from mission locations like San José and San Miguel de Comondú. The ports of San Carlos and López Mateos are the home for the grey whale during the winter. The Bahia San Juanico is ideal for surfers, the waves you find there can challenge the longest ones in the world.
Ciudad Constitución
It heads the municipality of Comondú, it has its origins in the middle of the past century from a small ranch that was called El Crucero (the crossroad) since that is where a crossroad was located, hundreds of families started establishing there attracted by the land, being this the center of commerce and the natural flow from the inhabitants of the Valle de Santo Domingo. It is considered the third biggest city in the state and a modern agricultural center.
Ciudad Constitución has attractions for those who like and have and interest in unlimited adventures. It has a spectacular boulevard that honors General Agustín Olachea, its tourism infrastructure is complimented by hotels, gas stations, banks, department stores and all the necessary services.
Ten minutes away you find Rancho Santa Fe, with its ostrich ranches which products are sent to Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey and in the immediate future for export. Also ostrich skins are sent to León and Guanajuato for the production of high quality footwear.
It has high technology greenhouses like Invernaderos Comondú, their entire tomato production is exported to the US and Canada and from there to Europe and Japan. Also the different variety of peppers production is outstanding. In July the Expo-Comondú is the most important agricultural, commercial and industrial fair in the state; national and regional performers are present and sports and cultural events are part of the fair. Another Fair is the Expo Fundación Produce celebrated in the month of April and where all the latest technology is presented to the agricultural community.
Puerto San Carlos
Located 56 kilometers west of Comondú it is a small fishermen’s town and even though it doesn’t have a great service infrastructure, it is rich in natural beauty. Situated in the Bahia Magdalena the whole area is ideal for ecotourism.
Another area with marshes and mangroves is Isla de Patos ideal for nature lovers, it is a splendid area for watching resident and migratory birds. Isla Margarita and Magdalena have fine sand dunes; the area is ideal for kayaking, snorkeling or just simply camping.
The fishing industry in this area represents more than 50 % of the state production, it is also well known from January through March for gray whale watching, several companies offer guided tours, some have glass bottom boats.
The Gray Whale festival is celebrated during the first days of March, besides music and dance, a Queen is crowned plus a variety of cultural activities.
